We are already planning the second pilot that will take a place in the Irene Middle School. Irene Middle School is very different from the Cornwall Hill College – the school where the first pilot took place.
I found an article about the Irene Middle School. It describes the Irene Middle School, as follows:
“The school was founded in 1908 as the Dutch Reformed Mission School, and registered with education authorities 20 years later with an enrollment of 50 learners – many of whom were children of farm workers in Irene and the surrounding farms.
Though it is now a fully fledged public school, boasting an enrolment of 578 learners from Grade R to 9, it is still registered as a farm school.
Its infrastructure and lack of teaching material continue to symbolize the inequalities of the past, and stand in sharp contrast with those of neighbouring schools like Cornwall Hill College and others.
But for parents who cannot afford the high cost of education, this school is the only place where they can send their children in the Centurion area.”
We still need a permission from the educational authorities to do the pilot in the school. However, we are already having meetings with the teachers and are getting fast into design of the new lesson plans.
The second pilot will be implemented with 2 Grade 9 classes with 40 students in each. The pilot is planned to start July 24th.
It was recently reported that all the computers in the computer centre of Irene Middle School was stolen over the April holiday period. This should not impact the pilot but does raise the question of safeguarding of the phones. A need to look at insuraning the kits maybe???
